Law Of Attraction - The Basics Of Why Your Life Is The Way It Is

The Law of Attraction is an ancient concept that is being made widely known by a massively popular DVD movie called, 'The Secret'.

The Law of Attraction is based on a Universal Law that is all around you working all the time. It states that what you give your attention to in life, you attract. In other words, like attracts like. Everything in your life, your current situation, the good things you like and the bad things you do not like, you have literally attracted.

Now, the immediate response tends to be 'no I did not, I did not attract this or that'. We live in an orderly Universe that is very specific and precise. So much so, that we can time the landing of a spacecraft on the moon within a few seconds. You attract what you give your attention to most.

The problem is that most people tend to focus on the things that they do not want and wonder why they are in the situation that they do not want! The Law of Attraction does not discriminate between good or bad, it is all relative. Whether you want something or do not want something, as long as you are thinking about it, you are attracting it!

Take money for example as most people have issues here. A lot of people are in debt and can never seem to get out of it. They think, well, I do not want to be in debt. Whether you want to get out of debt or not, if you are thinking debt, then you are going to attract more of it. This is a powerful Law. The Law of Attraction is working all the time. Whether you see it, understand it or not, it is there, like the force of gravity. You can see gravity and like me you probably do not understand it. But you know it is there and the effect it has.

What you need to start doing if you are unhappy with something in your life is to shift your focus. You need to start putting your focus on the things that you do want, not what you do not want! It is easier said than done but little by little, the more you practice this, the more you will start to see things shift in your life. As you practice and become aware of the things that you want, actually start appearing in your life, you will know this is the Law of Attraction at work. You are the creator of your reality. Focus on what you want and change your life!

The Law of Attraction - The Unanswerable Question Answered?

Question: If we attract only that which we think about, then how can you explain negative manifestations in the lives of very happy and positive people. I'm talking about devastating events such as being diagnosed with cancer, car accidents and so on. Surely nobody actively thinks about these things, let alone attracts them. Even very positive dynamic people have suffered these unfortunate consequences. How does the 'Law of Attraction' and positive thinking explain away these occurrences?

My Answer: I think it is important to remember that the 'Law of Attraction' is not just a force that works on an individual one-to-one basis. It is at work with the entire universe. We are truly talking about a far reaching global force here. Just as gravity works to hold down your pencil to the table, it also works to hold down the mountains to the earth.

Now let's have a look at the force of gravity in action for a moment. Imagine two objects, a large asteroid and a small pebble. Which is going to make the biggest impact upon the ocean, the pebble falling from the sky or the asteroid falling from the same height. Both are under the same force, only of course the asteroid is going to make a much bigger impact than the pebble. So it is not that the law of gravity is not working upon the pebble, it is... just that when it hits the ground it's impact is going to be over-ridden by the impact of the asteroid. What I'm saying is that the impact of the asteroid will over-ride and negate the pebbles impact.

Here is how this applies to our lives. You could equate the force of the asteroid to the belief in society that 'car crashes do happen at random'. I imagine if you conducted a survey of a few thousand people you would get the opinion that people do in fact believe that. So guess what is going to manifest in real life. Regardless of whether you as an individual have any particular belief about this subject, someone is inevitably going to be randomly involved in a car accident and therefore suffer the consequences of societies beliefs and point of attraction. Even if the individual person believed that they personally would not suffer this particular fate. Which force is going to have the largest attraction point, the asteroid of societies belief or the pebble of one person's thoughts.

Following this unbreakable law it becomes apparent then that the over-riding beliefs of society will make an impact on some people's lives. That is not to say you cannot enhance your own level of attraction, you most certainly can alter and change it to attract that which you wish, however there may be some occasions whereby this force is simply over-taken by societies beliefs and attraction levels. This maybe especially true in areas of your life where you may already have a low point of attraction and not applied much focus.

Another example of this in operation may be the observation of some countries. Of course there are many reasons why some countries are poorer than others but if you have a nation of people desperately hungry and living in poverty. Where do you think there most dominant thoughts are going to be focussed upon...more than likely on feelings of lack and of wanting. Of course then this is only going to attract more of the same and when entire nations are experiencing these thoughts and feelings, how on earth can they break-free from their poverty?

Whilst I don't wish to be-little any country, person, place or thing it does appear that the world really is not helping itself a great deal. Ok, so if I'm so smart what is the answer then? Well, I guess if everyone could become aware and use this concept in their favour, shifting their beliefs to abundance and well-being then maybe the world might have a chance of eliminating fear, worry, poverty and so on. Now that's a pretty big ask for sure, especially when you are one of the people suffering sat wondering where the next meal will come from!

The only way I could ever possibly see this happening is quite frankly through religion. How else could the entire world be united and taught these truths. I believe Jesus had it absolutely correct with his teachings of loving thy neighbour. He knew that by doing so this would inevitably attract the same feelings and manifestations of these back towards him. He assuredly knew that God/source energy/infinite power would match this vibrational thought pattern and return it to him. Two well known Bible messages backing this up on both the positive and negative side of this law include:

Seek ye first the kingdom of god and all these things shall be added unto you' and:
'Those whom fight by the sword shall die by the sword'.

I hope you too can see the power in these statements. I'm sure some people reading this will disagree and differ with some of my statements and that's fine. Each of us is on our own journey of inner discovery and what is true for one persons experience clearly may not be for another. The important thing to remember is to keep growing, keep progressing, keep discovering and above all to enjoy the journey....for you are going to be on this journey all of your life! Why not make it a Positive Thinking one full of prosperity and abundance?

Manifesting Intentions - By Steve Pavlina

With respect to the intention-manifestation model of goal achievement mentioned in the previous post, like many others who’ve tried it, I have some difficulty applying it. When I’m at my most conscious, I’m able to focus my intentions congruently, and my goals begin to manifest with relative ease. However, sometimes I sink to a lower level of awareness and succumb to those conflicting thoughts and then have to deal with their manifestations as well. So the limiting factor seems to be my ability to keep my thoughts focused on what I want instead of putting mental energy into thinking about what I don’t want. Think of it like learning to manage mental karma.

I was curious about why this seems to be the case, so a few weeks ago, I put out the intention to get an answer to this question. I often use focused intention to get answers to questions, and it works quite well. I don’t blindly accept the answers — I use them as pointers for where to look, so everything runs through the intellect to see if it makes sense.

My question was, “Why is it that I seem to clearly understand the intention-manifestation process and can sometimes apply it to achieve wonderful results, but other times I cannot seem to focus enough on what I want without also harboring thoughts of what I don’t want?”

Then I waited for the answer to arrive.

And as usually occurs when I do this sort of thing, within a couple days I started noticing some interesting synchronicities. They were all instances of an early 1980s TV show called The Greatest American Hero. References to this show kept popping up around me, even though I hadn’t even thought about that show for years.

That was one of my favorite shows when I was 10 years old, so I still remembered it well. And it gave me the answer I was looking for.

If you aren’t familiar with the show, it’s about a high school teacher named Ralph who gets a visit from a UFO. The aliens give him a super suit which gives him powers, including flight, invisibility, and psychometry. The only problem is that he loses the instruction manual that came with the suit. So while he’s able to figure out and use some of the powers, he does so very badly. When he flies he’s always flapping his arms hysterically and crashing into things like walls, trees, and cars.

That answer made a lot of sense to me. Essentially the answer was, “Yes, intention-manifestation is a special power that humans possess, but you don’t fully understand how to use it yet.” It’s like having Ralph’s super suit without the instruction manual. You can still apply it, but only badly.

When I put out intentions to receive answers, they often come back in the form of synchronicities that lead to information, sometimes in symbolic form. Usually the symbols are obvious and easy to interpret. Sometimes the first synchronicity is also a trailhead. If you follow it, it can provide even more clues.

I decided to follow this trail, so I rented the first season of The Greatest American Hero on DVD (via Netflix). It was nostalgic to watch some of these old shows, and one of the first season episodes had a long sequence shot at CSUN, where I went to college about 10 years after that episode first aired. But the main thing I noticed was how the main characters’ discoveries and experiences were paralleling some of the things I was doing in my life right now. It was like the show was a symbolic representation of certain things I was learning. Ultimately the show gave me a lot of clues for other things to look into, which lead to some further answers.

One of my main goals is to learn more about how to use this intention-manifestation model and to better understand how it works. I can’t use the scientific method to explore it — no one can — because I can’t objectify my thoughts and separate them out to study them. But that doesn’t prevent me from exploring it on my own. Under this model it’s impossible to convince anyone that it works in any objective sense. Why? Because if you don’t believe in intention-manifestation, then that itself is an intention to manifest the failure of this model, so that’s what you’ll experience. But if you choose to believe it can work and will work, then it suddenly begins to work.

It’s unfortunate that there’s no way to convince someone this model works if they don’t already believe it works because that person will simply generate their own intentions to block anything that would convince them otherwise. But on the other hand, there seems to be so much power and potential in exploring this model, that I am eager to explore it further.

Many people would see the intention-manifestation model as a purely subconscious phenomenon. You convince yourself that something is true and thus become a self-fulfilling prophecy. And that is one way for this model to manifest results. There are many times where I could say the results might have come from subconscious action, such as when you notice a certain book in a bookstore. And of course this model can also manifest through direct action — you intend to do something, and then you do it. I don’t think it’s much of a stretch for people to accept that we can achieve results both through conscious and subconscious action.

But what about superconscious action? Can you generate results without physically doing anything to create them? Can you manifest real-world physical stuff just by willing it to be so?

This is what I’ve been experimenting with lately. The challenge is to separate out what I might be subconsciously creating below my level of awareness. And that seems to be something of an impossible task without bringing in outside observers, and then those observers would corrupt the experiment with their own intentions. This is where The Greatest American Hero reference fits. There’s no instruction manual.

But even though I can’t do experiments that would be able to convince anyone who wasn’t already convinced, that limitation doesn’t prevent me from getting some interesting results. I can’t separate the subconscious effects from the superconscious ones, but the interesting thing is that from the perspective of getting results, that doesn’t actually matter. If I believe in the superconscious effects, then the results are greater than if I don’t. It could be that a belief in the superconscious merely drives the subconscious effects into high gear. But even if that is what’s happening, it’s still a positive result.

I’ve been doing a lot of experiments over the past few months, trying to manifest different things, and not worrying so much as to whether they’re coming about through subconscious or superconscious action. I just let the intention decide how it wants to manifest without trying to control it. So far this has been working really well. I’ve even been able to co-create some interesting things with my wife, especially when we go out on dates.

After doing a lot of little experiments, last week I decided to focus on manifesting some extra cash, just to see if I could do it. Within two days I had received or found an extra $115. But by the end of the week, the total was up to $4332. None of this was from regular income sources. It was all “found money.” $1000 of it was expected. The rest was totally unexpected. During that week my regular income also went up after I did some Adsense optimizations. In fact, yesterday yielded the highest revenue ever, more than the entire first month’s total. So not only was the extra cash created, but a (likely permanent) income boost also occurred. Interesting….

I’ll certainly continue experimenting with this model. Material stuff isn’t the most important thing to me though, so I’m putting a lot more energy into intentions related to gaining understanding and knowledge. Perhaps I should put out an intention for the instruction book to arrive.

Intended Outcomes

My experience with manifesting intentions is in many ways quite different than those expressed by many gurus. I see that many self improvement experts simply repeat what others have said without adding anything from their own success.

This happens in a great deal of the publishing world. Writers take suggestions, techniques and philosophies from the current field of work and simply duplicated whatever is being promoted. In my opinion, this creates a false sense of importance to the concept or approach being offered. They suggest it’s a very easy thing to do but without providing any real valuable advice to their readers as to how to accomplish this.

I have spent a great deal of time, thought and research into the concept and technique called “Manifesting Your Intentions.” Even Dr. Wayne Dwyer is promoting his books via PBS television shows. He talks about and around the topic. In my opinion, he offers very little in useful “how to” advice and information to listeners about how to understand and apply ways of developing this power for themselves.

Most of the success programs I’ve studied focus on all the “need toos” by which I mean they tell you what you need to do to succeed while hardly ever tell you of “how toos”. For example, they’ll say that in order to be happy, all you need to do is smile. This supposedly creates a change in your life and you’re on your way to happiness. If however you are in a mood or condition that causes you to be sad, this smiling thing will not work. It just won’t register and get through to the inner part of your mind. These programs also offer a list of affirmations which they claim when repeated or written everyday will cause changes in your life. The promoters suggest that these processes will create an intention that will manifest itself in your life as if a miracle happened. If only it were so easy?

All of this places you in a position of a petitioner or beggar asking the gods to deliver riches and success to you. By taking on a new way of seeing yourself, you can make the all important shift from beggar to creator, victim to victor!

I have had a great number of spectacular experiences with manifesting my intentions. In most of these experiences, occurred because I felt a part of what I wanted to accomplish. Perhaps I’m blessed with some unusual power of insights that get me what I want. Perhaps it’s simply the application of age old laws that brought me success. Whatever it was, I had a certainty about the outcomes. It was like I called up the pizza man and wham, the pizza was delivered. No more effort than that.

As more and more of my intentions (expressed or not) were manifested, my sense of power, confidence and trust in the process became stronger and clearer.

Now don’t get me wrong. I didn’t cause these miracles every week, but they came into my life at times when say, I needed more money or a new consulting contract or a new girl friend.

It all started in the 60’s when not knowing anything about intentions, I sat down and laid out some goals for the next 12 months of my life.

I didn’t just write down a list of things like many of us do, but I took a look at each item and visualized it and the new value for it in my mind. I “owned it” so to speak. I was submerged in it. I experienced it happening in a very real sense.

I finished the list of items experiencing each as I chose to write it down and PUT THE LIST AWAY. Not thinking about it or looking at it for the next 12 months. Guess what? When I looked at it 12 months later, almost all of the goals had been met. I was flabbergasted! I was please but didn’t grasp the power at my beck and call until later after reading Maxwell Maltz’s book Psycho-Cybernetics, a book that changed my life forever.

So for now, let me say that I’ve come to appreciate this tremendous power I have and am always willing to share it and my experiences of it with everyone I can.

Manifesting Intentions Without Resistance

Suppose you set a positive intention, focus your energy on its manifestation for the highest good of all, see the promising alpha reflection, and then watch your results completely stagnate. Why did your intention fail to manifest as quickly as you desired?

Whenever this happens the root cause is that you failed to become a vibrational match for your intentions. Probably without even realizing it, you remained stuck in a pattern of intending for your desires NOT to manifest, thereby sabotaging yourself from making progress.

What creates this drag? The answer is your fears. Most of the time, your fears are subconscious. You aren’t even aware of them, so they sabotage you from the shadows. Your fears act as intentions which keep your desires from manifesting. The more you resonate with fear, the worse your results will be when consciously trying to apply the Law of Attraction. The LoA is still working fine, but you’ll be inclined to think it doesn’t work because your fears will cause you to keep manifesting more of the same. And the harder you push, the more your fears push back.

In this article I’ll offer you a process for bringing your fears to the surface and getting them out of your way, so you can stop them from interfering with your positive intentions. This will allow you to manifest your desires faster and more easily.

Intentions are a package deal

When you set a goal or an intention and begin moving towards it much more slowly than you’d like, the drag you experience comes from your fears, not the external world. If you put all your energy into changing your external circumstances without addressing your fears, your progress will be extremely slow, if you even move at all.

How can you identify the fears that interfere with your positive intentions? Here’s a fairly straightforward way to do it:

First, imagine you’ve already manifested your intention in its entirety. Sit quietly and just imagine it as being real right now. Don’t imagine it happening in the future — imagine it right now. You’re already there. It’s a done deal. Take a few minutes to make it as real as possible.

Now do some role-playing in your imagination. Mentally act out a few different scenarios to get a feel for what your life will really be like once this intention has become your present reality. Consider the major side effects. How will the achievement of this goal affect your health, finances, relationships, career, spiritual practice, etc? In what other ways will it change you? No change occurs in isolation, so how will this change ripple outward and create other changes? Try to get a clear sense of the whole package of changes, and see if you can figure out where your life might re-stabilize after the initial change.

For example, if your intention is to manifest a million dollars, imagine how that extra money will affect the other parts of your life. How will it affect your family, your friendships, your living situation, your career, your taxes, your eating habits, your spending habits, your spirituality? How will this one change create a tidal wave of other changes? Where will you actually end up when the dust finally settles?

Don’t idealize or demonize these side effects. Do your best to imagine the most realistic results you can.

Manifesting a million dollars, losing 50 pounds, getting married, moving to a new city, or switching careers are significant changes. A common mistake we make when putting out new intentions is that we consider those intentions in isolation, failing to account for the complete package of side effects.

If you spend even 10 minutes doing this exercise (longer is good too), you’ll notice there’s a lot more to your intentions than you initially realized. But if you don’t consider these side effects when focusing on your intentions, then your intentions will have little power to manifest because deep down, you’ll know they don’t represent a realistic, stable situation.

If you want your intentions to manifest, then you need to understand that they’re a package deal. You have to accept and intend the whole package, not just the convenient parts.

Uncovering hidden fears that sabotage your intentions

When you consider the whole package of your intentions, you’ll notice some internal resistance. Some parts of your visualization will be wonderful, while other parts will seem undesirable. For example, if your intention is to manifest a million dollars, and you know deep down that one of your close friends simply won’t be able to handle it because s/he responds negatively to anyone with that kind of money, then you may feel some resistance about manifesting the money. You want the intention, but you’re unhappy with the side effects.

Any undesirable elements that come up during this exercise will be pointers to your fears.

What holds you back from being totally congruent with your intentions isn’t the total package itself, since that package is (so far) only in your imagination. What holds you back is the fear that arises when you consider the total package. Going back to the example of your friend who responds negatively to financial wealth, your friend isn’t holding you back at all. It’s the fear of your friend’s reaction that’s the real culprit. Even if you never told your friend about your intention to manifest a million dollars, you’d still suffer the intention-blocking effects of your fear. Both your fears and your desires exist only within your consciousness at this point, not in the physical world, so the entire conflict is an internal one. But a lack of internal congruency is all it takes to kill your best intentions.

As you explore your visualization of the total package, take note of which parts you resist, and try to express them in words. For example, here are some fears you might list when you think about manifesting a million dollars:

fear that you’ll lose the money foolishly after putting so much energy into manifesting it
fear that your life will become too complicated trying to manage the money
fear that you’ll be stingy with the money, thereby having to admit you’re a stingy person
fear that your accounting and tax situation will become more complicated
fear that the money will strain your relationships
fear that the money will distract you from what’s most important to you
fear that managing the money will be stressful
fear that having more money will create more responsibility
fear that the money will isolate you, distancing you from your peers
and so on
Make a list like the one above for your own intentions. What fears arise when you imagine the total package? Where do you experience resistance?

One good fear is all it takes to keep your positive intentions from manifesting. Fear keeps you from becoming a vibrational match for your desires.

From fear to acceptance

If you want your intentions to manifest, you must eliminate the fears that conflict with your intentions. Once all the fear is gone, your intentions will manifest quite easily. But as long as you fail to address your fears, no amount of force will permit your intentions to manifest.

One of the simplest ways to eliminate your fears is to accept them. Stop feeding your fears with intentional energy, and just allow them to be. For example, if you simply accept that if you manifested $1 million, that yes, your tax situation would become more complicated, then you’re no longer turning that drawback into a fear. You’ve downgraded the fear into a consequence.

The difference between a fear and a consequence is acceptance. A fear is an outcome you resist. A consequence is an outcome you accept. When you fear part of the package that surrounds your desire, you effectively resist your desire, meaning that you intend it NOT to manifest. But when you accept the total package, you allow your desire to manifest without resistance. This is what it means to become a “vibrational match” for your intentions.

If you aren’t ready to accept the total package surrounding your desires, then you aren’t ready to manifest your desires.

This was a particularly difficult lesson for me to learn. Once I understood that if I wanted to manifest a new desire, I had to accept the whole package of side effects without resistance, I began getting noticeably better results with the Law of Attraction.

Lately I’ve been testing the LoA in the financial area of my life because it’s easy to measure the results to assess how well it’s working. When I began intending greater financial abundance with the Million Dollar Experiment kickoff in November 2005, I made some early progress, but I wondered why the money didn’t manifest instantly if the LoA truly works. Why should the LoA require the passage of time to manifest anything? Eventually when I tried the above exercise of visualizing the whole package, it became obvious that I was resisting (aka fearing) the side effects of having a million dollars. Even though my intentions were positive, my fear was still creating a lot of drag.

One by one I’ve been working on those fears by acknowledging and accepting them as consequences. Once I release my resistance, I create an empowering belief to replace the fear. This just means I take the same consequence and find a way to interpret it as a positive instead of a negative (via Creative Observation). For example, if I fear having a million dollars because it will complicate my tax situation, I first accept it as a consequence by letting go of my resistance. I admit to myself, “OK, so more money will mean a more complicated tax situation. That’s just a fact to be accepted, not something dreadful I need to fear. I can deal with it.” Then I shift it over to an empowering belief by saying, “If I have more money, I can hire a good accountant to handle my taxes, so even though my situation may be more complicated, I’ll be able to afford all the help I need.”

As another example I worried that some people would react negatively to my attempts to attract greater financial abundance, misjudging my motives and assuming I’m “just in it for the money,” especially as I reach beyond the survival income range and into the abundance range. But I realized this is totally my issue, not anyone else’s. If my motives are honorable and genuinely focused on serving the highest good of all, then I needn’t worry about anyone’s opinion of me. The very fact that I’m so concerned about this issue indicates that I care far more about service than I do about money anyway. My external reputation is out of my control because it exists purely in other people’s minds, so I can’t allow myself to become attached to it. I can only do my best and accept the consequences. I choose to focus on the good I can do with more money, including finding new ways to explore and express my purpose.

Has this process of working through my fears been effective? I have no doubt that it has. I can feel how much my energy has shifted over the past year. Consider that today this website generates more than 10x the income it did a year ago, and my expectation is that it will generate at least $500,000 in 2007 if I simply continue doing what I’m already doing. Moreover, I can envision a clear and unobstructed path to an income of $100,000 per month. This money isn’t flowing because I’m forcing it — I’m simply allowing it to arrive. The real work isn’t what I do with my business — it’s what I do with my consciousness.

I absolutely, positively must credit this financial increase to working through my fears, accepting them as consequences, and replacing them with empowering beliefs. In the past several months, the money has been flowing in such avalanches it’s almost ridiculous how easy it is… easy from a business standpoint, but still a challenge to work through those fears.

This process requires some deep self-assessment and introspection, so it’s not an overnight fix by any means. For me it’s been extremely eye-opening though. I’ve been amazed at just how many fears came up that I needed to deal with. I realized that in order to overcome a fear, I must first identify it. It’s become abundantly clear that the more I work though my fears, the faster my results improve.

I still have more internal resistance to deal with, so I’m certainly not done yet. But I know that this process works.

The really insidious part — the part that keeps me up at night thinking about it — is whether the intention of the Million Dollar Experiment itself is responsible for my discovering that I needed to work through my fears to allow the original intention to manifest. Will a powerful intention actually manifest the very tools necessary to help it manifest? Consider that this website is the central hub of the Million Dollar Experiment. If I can successfully manifest $1 million via the experiment’s intention, then I’ll surely explain all the details here and offer whatever insights I can into how to accelerate the process, thereby potentially enabling thousands of other participants to use the same process to generate their $1 million as well. Could it be that the mere intention is all it takes to get the ball rolling — and keep it rolling — even in the presence of deep-seated resistance?
